Brief history

Established in the year of 1966, Meiho was the first privately funded College of Nursing in Taiwan.  For the past 40 years, Meiho has not only cultivated a great number of excellent nursing professionals, but also endeavored to strengthen and promote educational and service qualities.  Most graduates are able to practice what they have learned in school as well as being acknowledged by the medical field with their expertise and capabilities. 

In 2000, Meiho was upgraded from a five-year-junior college to a university-level Institute by the permission of the Ministry of Education, and was renamed as Meiho Institute of Technology.  Currently, Meiho consists of sixteen departments and two graduate programs.  The population in the Department of Nursing nearly reaches to four thousand students.  "Teaching earnestly and learning continually" is the basic motto for the faculty members in Nursing department.  Furthermore, the faculty is also striving to design the curricula emphasizing on the Communal Nursing based on Meiho district's geographical needs and population features.  Several professional projects have been also implemented through the cooperation of all the faculty in recent years, such as establishing the first Home-Care Center  which is affiliated with the college in Taiwan and undertaking the project of the Communal Health Promotion in Chu-Tien county, authorized by the Department of Health in Bureau of Health Promotion.  To keep pace with the new challenges in new era, and growing global trends, the Graduate Institute of Health Care Management was established in 2003, with the goal of recruiting more international students from Southeast Asia. 

 

 

Educational beliefs

Based on the core belief of integrating both science and art, and incorporating the school motto (kindness, discipline, gentleness, and diligence) in mind, the Department of Nursing is dedicated to raise students for professionals with expertise, highly committing spirit, and managerial capability.  The following concepts are embedded in our educational beliefs:

 

1.Human Beings :To educate students as consisting of physical, mental, social and spiritual elements as a whole, who pursues the state of harmony and balance by self-adjusting and interacting with the changing environment.

2.Health:To reach homeostasis state of  interaction among body, mind, society and spirit.

3.Environment: To pay attention to circumstances where people, things, internal and external events around human beings that influence lives.

 

4.Nursing: To raise caring and helping professional with the scientific knowledge and humane spirit.  Nursing professionals will help people to prevent diseases, to maintain, improve or recover health, and to face possible death peacefully. Nursing professionals have to integrate all kinds of knowledge and resources as a whole, work actively with other professionals as a team, keep Nursing Ethics in mind, and commit themselves to a life-long learning style.  

 

5.Teaching: To emphasize the interaction process between teachers and students. Every student is unique and potential.  A teacher's responsibility is to provide students with rich learning resources, guide them all the way of the training process, and cultivate them to become nursing professionals via state-of-the-art of teaching expertise.

Educational goals

Courses are designed to encompass three major fields of the medical system in addition to the cultivation of competent students.  The goal is to provide both nursing care and managerial proficiency in communal preventive healthcare and aftercare.  The distinctive features of the education of the Department include:

  1. Integrating humanities, professional theories and professional knowledge in the curricula;
  2. Applying strategies and approaches to enhance students' capabilities in critical thinking and problem-solving; and
  3. Emphasizing the incorporation and application of both theory and practice to meet to local district demands.
  4. Focusing on the integration of theory and practice of nursing caring.

Teaching Features

 

The distinctive feature of the Nursing Department is the design of teaching curriculum which covers the national three-stage medical care system.

The aim of the junior college level is to train students to develop practical professional capability, and to focus on physical, psychological and social skills in caring for patients. Undergraduate level emphasizes community and long-term care as well as professionals expertise, highly committed caring spirit, and managerial capability, so as to be able to use them.

 

According to the school regulation, every year, awards are given to students who are successful in acquiring professional licenses or certificates in the following related courses, computers, English, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Life Support (ACLS). The awards are classified in four levels, ranging from 1000 NTD to 5000 NTD in proportion to its professional level and must be applied for. In addition, from 2007 onward, nursing students enrolled in any of the school educational programs must pass the BLS certificate successfully to be able to graduate.

Programs

The Department of Nursing offers 5-year diploma programs, 2-year and 4-year baccalaureate programs, and a 2-year RN to BSN program which permits practice nurses to study for bachelor's degree supported by the Institute's Extension Education Center. Students enrolled in 5-year diploma programs or 2-year RN to BSN program when graduate are awarded Associate Bachelor's Degree, which is based on 220 credits (198 compulsive and 22 optional) or 80 credits (68 compulsive and 12 optional). Those enrolled in 2-year or 4-year baccalaureate programs when graduate are awarded Bachelor Degree, which is based on 72 credits (44 compulsive and 28 optional) or 128 credits (100 compulsive and 28 optional).

Future Prospect

 

The 5-year diploma programs aim to train students to develop basic and practical professional capabilities. After graduation, the majority of students enter nursing practice by working in hospital clinical settings. Therefore, the curriculum design put particular emphasis on medical care.

 

Undergraduate program aims to train students to keep up with the fast change in society and the fast growth of health technological industry, as well as the various and multidimensional demand in public care. Since Meiho is located in the south of Taiwan where the majority of communities and cities are agricultural and rural, and the medical resources are small and not well-shared. In addition, it is to be noted that in 2006 the population of 65 years old and above reaches 11.8%. Community health and long-term care become the urgent health need. The Department of Nursing therefore endeavors to prepare nurse students to be self-governing in providing for their future nursing career.
